About This Tool

Free, fast, and independent — built to help Australian workers

What Is OvertimeCalculator.com.au?

OvertimeCalculator.com.au is a free, browser-based tool designed to help Australian employees quickly estimate overtime pay, penalty rates, and casual loading. It is built for everyday workers who want a simple, transparent way to cross-check their pay — without navigating lengthy award documents or waiting on hold with HR.

The site also includes practical guides on Australian pay rules, step-by-step worked examples, and a full explanation of how the calculator model works.

About the Operator

OvertimeCalculator.com.au is operated by Wildstream Forest, an independent website operator based in Australia. We build free, general-purpose informational tools for Australian consumers and workers.

We are not a payroll company, employment law firm, union, employer group, or government agency. We do not provide any individual pay or legal advice. The site is maintained on a voluntary basis to provide a useful public resource.

If you have feedback on the calculator or find an error, please contact us.

Why This Site Exists

Overtime pay rules in Australia can be genuinely confusing. With over 100 Modern Awards, each setting different rates, overtime triggers, penalty multipliers, and casual loading methods, it is difficult for an everyday worker to quickly estimate whether their payslip is roughly correct.

Many people know they worked Saturday — but they do not know whether that qualifies as overtime, a penalty rate, or both. They know they are casual, but they do not know whether their loading should interact with their Sunday rate through method A, B, or C.

OvertimeCalculator.com.au exists to make the estimation step as transparent as possible. It provides fast, honest general estimates — clearly labelled as general estimates — alongside explanations that help users understand what they are looking at and where to go for definitive answers.

How We Keep Information Reviewed

The calculator's default values (overtime thresholds, multipliers, casual loading percentage) are based on publicly available Modern Award provisions and the National Employment Standards. We review the site periodically to ensure the defaults remain broadly representative and that links to external resources remain current.

We do not update in real-time when individual awards change — award variations happen frequently across different instruments. The last reviewed date shown on each page reflects when we last checked the general accuracy of the defaults and content on that page.

For current, award-specific rates, always use the Fair Work Ombudsman Pay and Conditions Tool, which is updated when awards change.

Limits of the Calculator

This calculator has important limitations that users should understand before relying on its estimates:

  • It does not know your award. The calculator uses general defaults. Without knowing your specific Modern Award, it cannot produce an award-accurate result.
  • It does not know your classification. Pay rates vary by classification level within most awards. The calculator uses a flat multiplier on your base rate, not a classification-specific rate table.
  • It uses a daily overtime threshold. The main calculator triggers overtime based on daily hours worked. If your award uses a weekly trigger (or both daily and weekly), results will differ for some scenarios.
  • It does not model weekly accumulation. Running the calculator once per shift and summing results does not automatically account for weekly overtime triggers.
  • It does not include allowances. Shift allowances, tool allowances, leading-hand rates, and other allowances are not included.
  • It is not suitable for apprentice pay. Apprentice rates are calculated differently and are not supported.
  • It is not a payroll system. Do not use this calculator for formal payroll processing, underpayment claims, or any purpose requiring award-accurate calculations.

See the full methodology page for a detailed explanation of every assumption and limitation.
